From framework to feedback:
The power of the MIPI Short
Imagine having a key that unlocks the door to transformation in your coaching sessions. Enter the Multidimensional Inventory for Personal Intelligence (MIPI) Short Form – a groundbreaking assessment born from two decades of research and innovation. This powerful tool delves into the depths of emotion, connection, and motivation, fueling life-changing clarity for your clients.
At the heart of the MIPI lies our ingenious hextile system – a revolutionary approach to psychological reporting. By simplifying complex test scores into six easy-to-understand categories, the MIPI empowers coaches to dive right into meaningful conversations and game-changing growth strategies.
EQ (emotional intelligence), SQ (social intelligence), and MQ (motivational intelligence) form the bedrock of the MIPI Short. Each hextile presents a unique growth stage for clients, sparking curiosity and self-discovery. Say goodbye to confusing numbers and hello to illuminating insights as you guide your clients toward their full potential.
This language encourages curiosity and exploration instead of self-criticism or defensiveness.
Hextiles: Behaviour through a new lens
Ready to shake up the way you understand human behavior? Introducing Hextiles – a cutting-edge method designed to shed light on the complex world of emotional, social, and motivational intelligence. This fresh approach offers a unique perspective on the MIPI Short results, breathing new life into your coaching sessions.
Hextiles break free from the rigid confines of traditional scoring methods, arranging your clients' results in a dynamic spectrum of possibilities. Think of it as a captivating journey of self-discovery, where tendencies come alive and illuminate the path to growth.
With six distinct categories, the hextile system unveils a wealth of insights:
MALLEABLE
This quotient is not in your repertoire. You use alternatives almost exclusively.
DEVELOPING
You have begun to use this quotient but resort to alternatives for most situations.
BALANCED (left)
You tend to use alternatives over this quotient but have a good balance of both.
BALANCED (right)
You tend to use this quotient over alternatives but have a good balance of both.
SOLIDIFYING
You have begun to use alternatives but resort to this quotient for most situations.
REINFORCED
Alternatives are not in your repertoire. You use this quotient almost exclusively.
NOTE: An “alternative” is any strategy that does not directly align with the quotient in question. What those are will come out during questioning. For example, someone with malleable EQ might allow emotions to overwhelm them without pausing to reflect on how they appear to others. More examples are below.
This approach shines a judgment-free spotlight on the client's behavioural tendencies. For instance, rather than labelling a client as "low" on EQ, the MIPI Short might place them in either the malleable or developing hextiles. This language encourages curiosity and exploration instead of self-criticism or defensiveness. Because the bar radiates from the center, there's no visual suggestion that the score is "low", which helps to prevent self-deprecating conversations.
The MIPI Short in action
The accordions below show how each quotient works with the hextile system. Spanning a continuum, the assessment's scores help give shape to your client's behaviour, decision-making, and interpersonal interactions. Coaches can use the MIPI Short to guide conversations that uncover patterns and inform actionable strategies.
By identifying where a client's behaviours fall within each continuum, coaches can tailor their approach to build on strengths and address challenges. For example, a reflective client might benefit from strategies that foster spontaneity, while a prosocial client might explore ways to set boundaries without compromising their relationships.
The hextile system removes much of the complexity and judgment that accompany traditional scoring methods.
Why coaches love the MIPI Short
The MIPI Short recognizes a coach's need for simplicity and actionable insights. By offering clearly structured feedback, the assessment supports both client development and the coach's practice. This tool provides an effective way to organize client personal intelligence scores. This offers the coach an improved ability to accompany clients on their coaching journeys.
Non-judgmental language
Clients often hesitate to engage with assessments because they fear being labelled or judged. The MIPI Short avoids terms like “high” or “low” (both of which carry pejorative potential), focusing instead on the client's hextile position. This approach reframes results as opportunities for exploration and creates a safe space for clients to approach their feedback with curiosity and confidence.
Developmental focus
The hextile framework helps your client to reflect on their growth potential rather than worrying about their score locking them into a box (a consequence of more traditional reporting paradigms). For instance, a client with “developing” SQ might consistently struggle to connect with others. This is something you can both take action on, however, which means your client can change their score.
Efficient insights
The MIPI Short distills insights into a format that coaches can immediately use. Each hextile provides clear guidance on the client's behavioural tendencies, which removes the need for lengthy, cumbersome reporting. Instead, coaches can focus their sessions on actionable conversations rather than spending half of their time together trying to decipher complex data.
The PQ score helps your client to consider the implications of their behaviour.
The Personal Intelligence Quotient (PQ)
The MIPI Short introduces the Personal Intelligence Quotient (PQ), a single score that averages the three dimensions of personal intelligence. In this one number, coaches have an instant snapshot of their client's outward behaviours.
The PQ score offers a starting point to understand broader patterns in your client's development, but gains meaning when considered alongside the individual dimensions. For instance, a balanced PQ score might result from moderate tendencies across all three emotional, social, and motivational intelligence dimensions, or it could indicate extremes in two dimensions balanced by a middle score in the third. When coaches examine PQ in the context of their clients' other scores, coaches have a barometer that helps to guide their coaching conversations.
The PQ score is not intended to pigeon-hole your client. In conjunction with the hextile system, PQ instead helps your client to consider the implications of their behaviour and plot a pathway to their desired destination.
Practical applications for coaches
The MIPI Short equips coaches to tailor their approach to each client's unique needs. Consider the following example:
This client likely thrives in emotionally and motivationally charged environments where they can focus on their goals and manage their emotions effectively. However, their preference for independence in social situations may present challenges in collaborative settings or relationship-building. The following are some ways to interpret this graphic.
